The Story Behind Our House's Name:

What’s in a name? And why Aunty Olives?

Well, it starts way back when we purchased the house. As we drove away from the open inspection on the very first day we saw her (yes, she is definitely a her), my husband mentioned that it reminded him of his Aunty Olives place.

Aunty Olive was a family friend of his Nanna (a self-proclaimed aunt, you could say) who would always open her house to his family when they travelled to Adelaide. Over the years, they had reason to frequently come to Adelaide and Olives became a sanctuary. A home base. Their home away from home. There would always be a cup of tea and some biscuits, a place to lay their heads and somewhere to relax and recharge.

And so very quickly Aunty Olives this house also became. We wanted to give a nod to her in some way as well to all of our Aunts (including the self-proclaimed ones) that enjoyed a tipple, sang loudly, had naughty snacks, would feed us second dinners or monster taco feasts, and would open their arms for a welcoming hug as soon as you entered the door.

And mostly we wanted to incorporate that hospitality and essence to all of our guests that come to stay.

PS. As a side somewhat serendipitous note we did not even notice the abundance of olive trees in the neighbour’s backyard behind us until that first weekend we moved everything in.
